Very nice French neo-classical piece from the period of the king Louis Phillipe (1830-1848). This handsome and elegant Hoilier Cruet was crafted in the city of Lyon by silversmith Armand Caillat, circa 1838. Made from solid .950/.999 sterling silver and individually assembled with three screws and several pins.
Weight: The sterling parts have a total of 405 Grams (13.03 Oz)
Measures: 8.02 by 4.03 by 11.5 Inches (20.3 x 10.2 x 29.2 Cm).
Hallmarks: Stamped with French marks; four times with the head of Minerva (hexagonal cartouche) for the assay and guaranty of the 95% silver and two times with the maker’s maitre lozange cartouche AC associated to Armand Caillat of Lyon.
Armand-Caillat was the only silversmith awarded at the Universal Exhibition in London in 1862 and at the Paris Exhibition in 1867, 1878, 1889 and 1900. He also published three brochures on the occasion of the Universal Expositions of 1867, 1878 and 1889. In forty-eight years into his career, he created around 5,000 prestigious pieces, most of them for the great French sanctuaries such as Lourdes, La Salette or even Fourvière, but also for monasteries and especially for the Abbey of Saint-Pierre de Solesmes. He also creates original works for Popes Pius IX and Leo XIII. At present, about 1,000 drawings from his studio are kept in the Fourvière museum in Lyon.
Note: The 6 sides cartouche with the head of Minerva, means .950/.999 silver purity. Four sides cartouche means .800/.999.
Note: The AC cartouche inside a lozange, is the maker’s mark for the silversmith, Thomas Joseph Armand Caillat.
