Vintage horse sconces/wall lights, attributed to Maison Charles in gilt bronze & glass, 1970`s ca, French.
This pair of vintage wall lights has been thoroughly cleaned while respecting the aged patina. They are newly rewired, earthed, PAT tested by an electrician, fully working and ready to install. Each has a new porcelain & brass lamp holder. It is possible to install these lights in other countries although it may be necessary to purchase different light bulbs suitable to local electricity. They can be used with a dimmer.
This pair of vintage French lights is attributed to Maison Charles Lighting. They have several design features typical of Maison Charles: the horse theme, the combination of Regency & Neoclassical styles in a Modernist design concept, elegant proportions, luxury materials, quality crisp casting and heavy weight.
The design is classic, timeless and decorative. With the equestrian theme & strong sculptural presence, they would suit a range of interiors such as Antique, Traditional, Hollywood Regency, Post Modern, Industrial or Contemporary.
The composition consists of a horse head in gilt bronze with detailed casting at the centre of a round polished brass base. In the centre of the base there is a round lacquered satin black metal disc. The edge of the base is stepped. The design of the base contrasts and `frames` the horse head almost like a Neoclassical cartouche. The horse head includes a bridle, made of a quality brass chain, which swags from either side of the horse head to the back base secured in place by 4 decorative nuts. The horse head supports the lamp holder and a vertical glass shade.
At the back of each base there is a metal hook to fit the light to the wall.
The lamp holder sits inside a brass candle cup at the top of the horse`s head. Each lamp holder carries a small standard screw light bulb E14 up to 60 Watts each. At present fitted with Candle clear light bulbs of 25 Watts (as photographed), included in the price. These lights could take other bulb shapes for a different look.
The glass shades are original to the piece; tulip shape handblown glass of great quality. The shades are `chimney` design with the bottom cylinder portion sliding securely into the brass candle cup. The tulip shape have a bulbous elongated form, frosted white satin. The glass surface is smooth at the bottom turning & swirling towards the top with a subtle pattern and finished by hand with a wavy edge. The glass shades are removable for cleaning & transport.
These lights are both in very good vintage condition with the age patina preserved. The 2 glass shades are free of chips or cracks, only minor age related wear at the point of attachment to the brass. The gilt bronze heads & brass frames have minor marks on the metal & some age related patina.
Additional dimensions:
The diameter of the base that attaches to the wall is 15 cm
