19th Century Country French Armoire ~ Wardrobe is a magnificent expression of provincial artistry and craftsmanship! There was no lack of cabinetmaking talent in the outlying regions around the central furniture making hubs of Paris, Lyon and Bordeaux, as evidenced by this effort executed by artisans from Normandie out of the densely grained, old-growth indigenous oak that was the preferred medium of the region. A tailored architecture is enhanced with exquisite hand-carved detail reflecting classical themes of grapevines, foliate, laurels, Greek urns and even a sunflower on the scrolled apron. Wheat bordering defines the doors, which also feature amazingly complex French scrolls surrounding the intricate sculpted adornment. Brass barrel hinges mounted outboard allow the doors to swing wide for easy access, and complementary brass key guards add additional visual appeal. Note the pegged mortise & tenon joinery used throughout, even on the hand-chamfered plank and frame panels of the back side!
