Early-19th century
The Herculaneum pottery underglaze blue central pattern shows a series of images encircling an oval panel with a leafy vine. There are two main images, one with winged griffins attacking a woman in a chariot, and the other large image is of three women drawn in a chariot by five horses. To the sides are various other figures. The border has a distinctive Greek Key design with six oval panels, each with a different design of neo-classical design.

The neo-classical “Greek” pattern, introduced in 1806, catered to the demand for classical subjects created by the Greek Revival style. The images were taken from “Outlines from the Figures and Compositions upon the Greek, Roman and Etruscan Vases of the late Sir William Hamilton; with engraved borders. Drawn and engraved by the late Mr. Kirk”.
